On Wednesday, July 14, a House of Representatives’ committee voted on a proposal that would let HMOs, for-profit hospitals and other health-care companies gag their doctors, forcing them not to provide abortion services – or even information – to their patients.  Doctors would not even be allowed to refer women clients to another doctor under this proposal – even if a doctor thinks her patient’s health is threatened. An attempt by pro-choice Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) to counter the anti-choice proposal was defeated. The proposal and spending bill to which it's attached could be brought to the House floor for debate at any time.
